NaNo ’09

This year is very exciting for Vancouver as a NaNoWriMo region. This is our 9th year as an official region and after 8 wonderful years of being ML, highnez is stepping down to just enjoy participating in NaNoWriMo. In her place, Jennerosity is stepping up with MysteriousAges and the two of them have worked long and hard to make sure that 2009 is the biggest and most awesome year for writing a novel in a month ever in Vancouver!

In February of 2010, atheletes from all over the world will be coming to participate in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. 3 months before that, however, the Wrimos of Vancouver will be themselves entering into the pinnacle of literary competition: The Wrimolympics.  Be sure to check out our information on our official Write-ins as writers in the Lower Mainland will be gathering there to participate in grueling word wars and engaging in fierce typing marathons. They will plot, their characters will inexplicably purchase emu farms, word counts will soar, and some lucky few who have pushed past their competition will win awards in various events.

To ensure that the Wrimos of the region achieve their fullest word-padding potential and keep their stories (and thereby the rest of their lives) in some semblance of order, VancoWrimo has produced the first ever VancoWrimo PDA for 2009. Included in this 3×5 inch packet of cards are story and NaNo survival tips from the masters, cards to keep your plot from twisting out of control, pages to capture snapshots of your characters (lest you forget them) and even a Plot Device Generator to get you un-stuck from a writer’s block.

The NanoVancouver IRC chat room will be making an encore appearance as the VancoWrimo chat room. ThereAreSomeWhoCallMeTim, our beloved Word War bot, has been in BattleBot school and has learned a couple new tricks. Time permitting, he will also learn a couple more before November comes. BattleJesus, watch your back!

New Zealand has accepted the challenge and so we go to war with our rivals from across the Pacific! Last year, there was only a 2 to 3 thousand word difference in our collective counts. With a slim margin like that, there’s no telling who will pull ahead right in the last few moments of 2009.

Lots of great stuff is on the horizon, so buckle up and get your pens, paper and word processors ready. November is just around the corner…
